The Environmental Party was founded on Finland’s Independence Day in 2020. The initiative stems from several individuals’ frustration with the fact that, despite having the desire and ability to influence important issues, there didn’t seem to be a political party that felt right for them. We feel that advocacy for many important causes has been spread thinly across different parties.
The initiators and founders of the Environmental Party have been active in societal issues across Finland, both within politics and outside of it, and some have previously worked together. Among those involved in politics, most have served as independents within various party councils. Some of us have also participated in elections on the lists of different parties (e.g., the Centre Party, the National Coalition Party, the Swedish People’s Party and the Green Party).
Our founding members come from all over Finland. Some of us are from the capital region and others from small towns, and we are therefore familiar with the challenges facing provinces and large cities alike.

The Environmental Party is founded on the principle that the environment encompasses nature as well as everything else around us: natural environments, living environments, urban environments, and the countryside. Cultural environments, industrial environments, working environments, and people—these are all parts of a big puzzle, and we want to develop them all as a unified whole.
Our emphasis, which all other parties lack, involves the health, safety and pleasantness of living environments as well as people’s holistic well-being. These are absolutely essential viewpoints that are often ignored in policymaking in favour of other topics. This happens in spite of continued industrial projects presenting serious risks to the environment, as well as ongoing infill construction in cities at the cost of health and safety considerations.
The Environmental Party is a combination of big goals that are not found in any other party. Respect for nature, comprehensive welfare, balanced development of the country, a pro-entrepreneur agenda, sensible immigration policies, and individual responsibilities and freedoms—all these are now found in a single package.
